Age 99. After a rich, long, loving life, Ginny passed away peacefully at Josie Harper Hospice House with her son Tim by her side.

Virginia Rosalie Lyons was born on Aug. 6, 1925 in the family farm home east of Purdin, MO to Edward Hubert and Amanda Leta (Shreckhise) Lyons.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband Lester W. Lang, Norton, KS, parents Edward H. and Amanda Leta H. (Lyons), Purdin, MO, her sister Waverly Drake, Chillicothe, MO, and second husband Arthur J. Barker, Chillicothe, MO. Virginia is survived by her son Timothy Lang and wife Mary Reilly of Omaha, foster family Joe Felton, Norton, KS, son Will Felton, Norton, KS, son Nathan Felton, Hays, KS, daughter Brianna Hoffman (Felton) and Landon, Hastings, NE, and their children Emma, Olivia, Wyatt, as well as Christian Massy, her foreign exchange student/son of Mons, Belgium and his family. Virginia enjoyed many other friends and family.

Virginia attended Grantsville Rural School in Linn County, MO, graduated from Purdin High School, and received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia.

Virginia taught in rural schools during World War II, and after graduating college, worked as a Home Economist in Extension and the Dairy Council of Greater Kansas City.

Virginia and Lester W. Lang of Zap, ND, were married Aug. 24, 1957 in the Rural Bear Branch Methodist Church near Purdin, MO. Lester worked in administration for trucking companies which transferred their family from Kansas City, to Massachusetts, California, Kansas City and Norton, KS. Lester and Virginia bought and managed the Coast to Coast Hardware Store in Norton, KS, and enjoyed working together many years. Lester passed away in 1986. Virginia then managed the store 5 years and stayed in Norton 5 more years assisting people by driving them to Doctor visits and working in volunteer services. She moved to Chillicothe, MO in 1996 to be close to her sister Waverly and other family. Virginia married Arthur J. Barker in 2008. Arthur passed away in 2010. In 2011, she moved to Omaha to be close to her son Tim and wife Mary.

Virginia was always a member of the Methodist Church wherever she lived and a current member of St. Andrews Methodist Church, Omaha. She served on church boards, committees and children’s ministries through her life. She liked keeping busy and helping others. Her other interests were the American Association of University Women, and American Cancer Society.


Internment will be at the Norton, KS cemetery at a later date.
