Shirley E. Nelson

Omaha – Age 87.

After a long, rich and loving life, Shirley passed away into the arms of Jesus on Thursday morning July 20, 2023 in Omaha Nebraska.  She was born in Grand Island Nebraska June 27, 1936 to Laura Hartman and Earl Denman. 

Shirley was an amazing woman that always had a smile on her face and loved to laugh.  Everyone knew her as a kind and gentle woman.  She had many talents and was most proud of her personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  She led many bible studies, taught numerous Sunday school classes, and mentored many women in their walk with the Lord.  She first and foremost was a loving wife and mother to 5 girls and was a homemaker for many of her years.  She also taught ESL to Laotian refugees, worked at the First State Bank, and was a pharmacy clerk for Gothenburg Discount pharmacy.  In her spare time, she loved to sew, paint, and do crafts.  The grandchildren loved their week in the summer spent with grandma crafting and going to coffee at the donut shop. Shirley made everyone feel special.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 55 years, Larry Nelson, 4 daughters, 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Jody (Mark) Araujo with Daughters Jessica (Jomar)Pika, Jenna (Ryan) Lockhorn, and Jaime Delahunty; Stephanie (Dirk) Block with children Tyler (Colleen)Block, Morgan (Christian) Jarabe, Evan (Hannah) Block; Amy Mayberry-Sytsma with daughters, Chelsey (Michael) Rose, Madison (Ryley) Cidlik, Mel Sytsma, and son Colton Sytsma; And daughter Bobbi Nelson.

She is preceded in death by daughter Kimberly Willis (survived by Scott Willis, and their two daughters, Elizabeth (Ian) Yarger, and Kaitlyn (Drew) Gardner). And great granddaughter Remi Pika.

Visitation Wednesday 1:00 - 2:00 PM at mortuary. Celebration of Life 2:00 PM Wednesday (7/26/23) at Roeder Mortuary. Memorials to: Alzheimer’s Association or Samaritan’s Purse.
