Sherry K. Christiansen

On May 17, 2023, Sherry Christiansen passed away peacefully at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents Earl and Helen DeVore, her in-laws John and Margaret Christiansen, brother-in-law Mike Christiansen, and her son-in-law Paul Vetter.  She is survived by her husband of almost 30 years, John (JR) Christiansen, 2 children:  Jeff (Jennifer) Theisen and Amy (Brett) Jackson; 8 grandchildren:  Jordan Theisen, Justin (Bella) Theisen, Jensen (Dominic) Bristol, Luke (Julie) Vetter, Aaron Vetter, Alex (Meghan) Vetter, Nick (Allie) Vetter, and Delaney Jackson; 3 great grandchildren:  Liam and Jackson Theisen, and Frances Vetter, as well as her brother-in law and sister-in-law, Bill and Kay Biven, and sister-in-law Kathy Christiansen, many other cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends.

Sherry was born October 5th in Atlantic, IA to Earl and Helen DeVore, and grew up on the family farm near Cumberland.  She was the oldest of the five DeVore children (Sherry, Sandy (Monte) Hough, Sheila (Jim) Armsworth, Rod (Robyn) DeVore, and Brian (Kathy) DeVore) and upon graduation from Cumberland Massena High School, moved to Omaha to experience life in the big city and live with friends.  During this time, she worked at US Bank, but when Jeff and Amy were born, she spent several years being a stay-at-home mom.  Eventually she went to work for Baker’s Supermarkets in their corporate offices and finally worked at Great Western Bank from which she retired in 2008.

Sherry and JR married in 1993, but they have been together for much longer than that.  She loved her family more than anything, especially her 8 grandchildren.  She attended as many of their activities as humanly possible, always making them her top priority.  Sherry loved to travel, especially to warm, sunny places with a beach.  She loved to spend time at their place in the Lake of the Ozarks, and she was happiest out on the lake on their boat.  Sherry was an avid reader and for several summers, she was the top reader in the Omaha Public Library summer reading program for adults.

Growing up, Sherry attended the Cumberland Methodist Church, where she played the organ and piano during Sunday services throughout high school.  In Omaha, she attended Faith Westwood United Methodist Church and eventually attended Water’s Edge Church when they opened.  She and JR could be seen regularly at Saturday evening or Sunday morning services until her illness progressed.  Her family was so blessed to be able to get her to her youngest grandson’s wedding a few weeks ago, where she was able to see all of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, brothers and sisters.
