Sharon Kay Peck (Packer), 78, of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away on September 2, 2024. She was born to Vorace Packer Sr. and Fern Packer on July 21, 1946, in Omaha. Sharon was the first of four children; Then came Sue, Donna, and Vorace Jr. Her childhood years were spent enjoying sweet summers playing outdoors with her siblings, cousin Alice, lifelong friend Diane, & sister-in-law, Carol.
She continued on to Technical High School from 1960 to 1964, where she spent all four years on the cheerleading squad, worked a job, and maintained excellent grades. After graduating high school in May of 1964, she propelled into the business force as a secretary to the President of the company at Bee Line Motor Freight and eventually became manager at NTC Motor Freight. She spent a few enjoyable years there before heading to Hockenberg Newburgh, working to coordinate marketing factory orders to their rightful stores around the Omaha metro area. Throughout these first few jobs in the workforce, she created a name for herself as a hardworking, highly sociable & intelligent woman who knew how to find quick and easy solutions to any problem, no matter how big.
When Sharon’s lifelong friend, Carol, got engaged to Bob Gatzemeyer, she jumped at the opportunity to be a bridesmaid and stand with Carol on her special day. Little did she know that a year later they would be in the same position, only Carol’s brother, Jerry, would be marrying Sharon. On September 17, 1966, Jerry & Sharon were married, surrounded by their closest friends and family at Holy Name Catholic Church.
During the first year and a half of their marriage, Sharon & Jerry spent cherished time as foster parents, eventually fostering 16 infants and children. Jerry & Sharon then adopted their first child, Jennifer, in 1970, and soon followed their second, Andy, in 1973. In 1975 Sharon gave birth to her third child, Steven, and last child Katie, in 1978. Sharon happily embraced her maternal instincts and natural ability to give care for others in need. She raised all of the children at home until they were old enough to go to school, and then began working again. As a working mother, she truly became a woman of all trades.
Sharon then took over Mount Hope Cemetery, where she spent 20+ years rebranding the company into a successful, well-oiled cemetery. She worked diligently to create correct death records and collect as much information as she could to help that final place of rest flourish. Her years spent working to improve Mount Hope have not gone unnoticed in the Omaha community.
As the Peck family expanded, family holidays, keepsakes, and photos were all manned by the matriarch of the house. And, of course, when the grandchildren began arriving, Sharon upheld those duties further. Coining the name “Grammy” from her first born grandchild, Matthew, she immediately fell in love with being a grandparent. After four total grandchildren, she was well-versed in letting us indulge in our favorite sweet treats, letting us play outside until the streetlights came on, and giving us the encouragement to do whatever we wanted.
Sharon convinced everyone around her that they could be who they wanted to be, win what they wanted to win, and to fight for whatever they could. She was the most family-oriented, empathic woman to be in our lives. She took care of many problems without a fuss, and always listened to the best of her ability. She encouraged everyone to be the best versions of themselves, and never wavered in her faith that everything would end up okay. Grammy is our rock, a saint, and the glue to our family; We will miss her always and cherish her forever.
