In Loving Memory of Sharon Lynn Herzberg

August 22, 1937 – October 14, 2026

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Sharon Lynn Herzberg of Omaha, Nebraska, on October 14, 2026. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born in Page County, Iowa, Sharon was the youngest of three children born to Wendell and Myrtle McCunn. She graduated from Clarinda High School in 1955 and married the love of her life, Richard Herzberg, on November 6 of that same year. They shared nearly 63 wonderful years of marriage before Richard’s passing in 2018.

Sharon devoted her life to her faith, her family, and caring for others. As a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and “Gigi,” she found her greatest joy in nurturing those around her. She was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Treynor, Light of Life in Bermuda Dunes, California, and Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church in Omaha. Through these congregations, Sharon and Richard formed many lifelong friendships.

Known for her famous cinnamon rolls and peach pie, Sharon shared her love in countless ways, including the daily devotional texts she sent to encourage family and friends. Her eyes lit up whenever her great-grandchildren entered the room. She delighted in teaching them to bake, sew, and crochet, and loved playing games with them. Through these moments, she intentionally passed down treasured family traditions and the enduring values of patience, kindness, and love.

Sharon also cherished sharing lunch with her children, grandchildren, and friends, always making everyone feel welcome and cared for. Her family found it amusing that her favorite lunch spots were bar-and-grills, where she became quite the connoisseur of chicken wings.

Sharon always had a checklist and was exceptionally organized. She even managed to say goodbye to each of her friends and family members. In August, her family celebrated her 89th birthday with her. True to her faith, she purchased family Bibles for her children and grandchildren, believing that nothing was more important than putting God first in life.

Her checklist was never short of things to do. Christmas lights and decorations went up in October—HOA rules or not! She continued redecorating her home until the very end and thoughtfully planned her own Celebration of Life. But perhaps the most meaningful item on her final checklist was joining her beloved Richard in heaven on his birthday. And God heard her.

Sharon is survived by her four daughters: Christie (David) Dorn of La Quinta, California; Caryn (Greg) Stichler of Elkhorn, Nebraska; Carol (Bruce) Hemmer of Bennington, Nebraska; and Clarissa (Ed) Haats of Council Bluffs, Iowa. She also leaves behind many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard Herzberg; her parents, Wendell and Myrtle McCunn; and her siblings, Marcene Gillespie and Ronald McCunn.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on November 5, 2026, at Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church, 15005 Q Street, Omaha, Nebraska 68137, followed by lunch at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church, Mosaic, Leader Dogs for the Blind, Deaf Missions, the University of Nebraska Foundation for Parkinson’s disease research, or a charity of your choice.

Sharon’s legacy of faith, compassion, and unconditional love will live on through the family she cherished and the many lives she touched. She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of those who knew her.
