Age 55 -  Russell Jerome Matthews, known affectionately as Jerome, passed away on June 21, 2024, at the age of 55 in Omaha, Nebraska. Born on August21, 1968, in Shuqualak, Mississippi, he was a beloved figure in his community and a devoted family man. 

Russell's life was marked by a steadfast commitment to service, both professionally and personally. He served honorably in the United States Navy from 1989 to 2013, with deployments on the USS John Young and assignments at the Navy Reserve Center Omaha and Columbia. After his military career, Russell continued to serve his community through his work at the United States Postal Service, Aksarben HVAC technician, and the Army Corps of Engineers. He was also the proud owner of Matthews Heating and Air and shared his expertise as an HVAC Professor at Metro Community College Omaha and Vatterott College Omaha. 

Education was a significant part of Russell's life. He was a graduate of Burke High School and furthered his education receiving his HVAC degree from Midlands Technical College in Columbia South Carolina. 

Russell's commitment to community service extended into his personal interests. He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge Nathaniel Hunter Lodge #12 and found joy in bowling, fishing, and cooking. Known as a grill master, Russell cherished spending time with his family and friends, creating lasting memories. 

He was a dedicated member of the Eagles Nest Worship Center, where he found spiritual fulfillment and community connection. 

Russell's life was enriched by his large and loving family. He is survived by his mother, Linda Matthews; father, Norman Matthews; siblings, Herbert and Stephanie Matthews; children, Tia Booker, Tara Booker, Terra Booker, Kendra Matthews, Keona Lee (Jarvis Lee), Katie Matthews, Kayla Matthews, and Makayla Matthews; grandsons, Kylan, Christopher, Andre Jr., De’Trell, Tre’, Xavier, Jordan, Justice, Jase, and Keon; and granddaughters, Samiya, Sariah, Zakiya, Zalaya, and Skylar. He was preceded in death by his son, Louis Dickson.

 Russell's legacy of kindness, service, and community involvement will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.

Visitation / Wake Service: Wednesday (6/26/2024) from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Roeder Mortuary - 108th Chapel. Funeral Service: Thursday (6/27/2024) 11:00 AM at Roeder Mortuary, 2727 N. 108th Street, Omaha NE. Burial to follow at Omaha National Cemetery.  Services will be livestreamed below.
