Roy Hargrove, Sr. was born on October 9,1953. He was the fifth child of Willetta Johnson and Leroy Hargrove, both of Reform, Alabama, and was raised by his doting grandmother, Anna Johnson, born in Coalfire, Alabama.
Roy, Sr. graduated from Pickens County High School in Reform, Alabama in 1971. After graduation, he served in the U.S Army for six years, where he met his wife of 41 years, Patricia Crossley. They moved to Omaha, Nebraska in February 1981. Roy, Sr. then enlisted in the U.S Navy for three years and was stationed in Iceland. From this union Roy, Sr. & Patricia had two sons: Roy Lee, Jr. (Shawney) and Brandon Antwawn; and six wonderful grandchildren: AnJanae Genevieve, Roy Lee, III, Brandon Jr, Jay’Ceon (Jay Man), Ethan, and Josiah (Sincere).
As a young boy, Roy Hargrove, Sr. enjoyed sports, fishing, and swimming (in the water holes in Alabama) and he loved just being in nature. As an adult, Roy, Sr. enjoyed sports (especially Alabama Crimson...Roll Tide!), gardening, cooking and tending his manicured lawn. Roy, Sr. retired from the VA Medical Center after 40 years of dedicated and excellent service. When you think of the ideal man, perhaps you imagine someone who is courageous, strong, a provider, or has a good heart. He was all of those attributes and much more. As a man who exuded peace and strength simultaneously, he was admired by all who encountered him in his fulfilling life.
Roy, Sr. had a soul that seemed eternal. He always held his head high yet possessing a gentle expression. He walked through life without judgement but with compassion. The lessons his character taught others will forever live on in the actions of those whom he inspired and who loved him.
He was a family man and a significant representation of the Hargrove family. As melancholic as today is, if you knew Roy, Sr., you would know he wouldn’t want your sympathy. He would want you to find solace and embrace life as he did.
Roy, Sr. was preceded in death by his parents: Willeta Johnson and Leroy Hargrove; his grandmother: Anna Johnson; his siblings: Billy Hargrove of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Sandra Hargrove of Willingboro, New Jersey; and his daughter: AnJanae Genevieve Hargrove of Omaha, Nebraska.
