After college he returned to the family farm and served six years in the Army National Guard. On October 8, 1966, He married Carolyn Knapp.

While raising Teresa, Tiffany and Jon, he was a charter member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where he held most offices. He was active on the Greta Co-op board and loved raising cattle. The cattle led the kids into 4-H and the Sarpy County Fair every summer. Summers were also full of walking soybeans. Robert would hire kids from the church youth group to complete this task. When time permitted, family trips to Colorado to see family and Minnesota to attend the Wiese family reunion took priority. His love of the land was to save the soil and he was one of the first to go No Till. Harvest time was spent alongside Jay Startzer, Harold Cain and William Beck, where their wives' dinners were the highlight of the day. In later years harvest time was spent with son Jon, Harold Knapp, John Knapp and John Startzer.

Time away from the farm included a trip to Germany and Hawaii with sister Kathie and Richard. Two trips to California to visit dear friends Lee and Connie Hill, while there they went and saw Vegas and the Grand Canyon. He enjoyed watching Platteview basketball, the Omaha Storm Chasers, and any activities that involved his granddaughters. Trips to Mullen NE were a favorite to help with branding on Cousin Judy and Leonard Ridenours ranch. He loved going to Teresa and Kevin's ranch where he would spend days at a time.
