Omaha -
Norman Custard, 81, of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away on August 11, 2025. He was born on December 5, 1943, in Washington County, Nebraska, to Loretta and Elmer Custard.
Norman and Linda met on a blind date set up by good friends Bill and Shirley Neville. They married on April 3, 1971. They raised two children, Kevin and Kelly, who were important parts of Norman’s life.
As a Boy Scout and a Girl Scout leader, Norman had a lifelong love of camping. The family shared many wonderful camping trips over the years, creating lasting memories surrounded by nature.
He spent his career as a math and computer teacher, starting at Tech High School, where he met many lifelong friends. When summer break rolled around, he traded the chalkboard for the open road, driving trucks to help support his family. But not long after Kelly began playing softball, Norman parked the truck for good, choosing instead to spend his summers on the ball field coaching and mentoring.
Softball held a special place in Norman’s heart. He was a driving force in getting girls’ softball recognized as a sanctioned high school sport in Nebraska just in time for Kelly to play. Norman was also known for his deep knowledge of the game’s rules, so much so that it wasn’t unusual to find him in bed at night reading the softball rulebook cover to cover. His commitment to the sport and to fairness on the field became part of what people loved and respected most about him.
Whether in a classroom, in the cab of a truck, or coaching from the dugout, Norman led by example with steady presence that made people feel supported and valued. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched and the family he loved.
