Obituary

Millicent passed away on May 2 at the age of 94 years old.

Millicent was an integration trailblazer. She was the first black women to join The Angels, an auxiliary group who supported the cadets of the ROTC at Omaha University where she met her future husband, Norman Long. After earning her Master’s Degree in Education, Millicent joined the faculty at Howe Elementary School in Minneapolis as one of only three African American teachers, a “first” for the Minneapolis School System in 1953.

Millicent loved to sing, winning a piano at the “Steppingstones to Stardom” singing contest. She volunteered as a member of her church choir. She enjoyed seeing the world, so she traveled often with fellow members of The Links Inc. of Omaha and later with other friends or family.

Millicent was preceded in death by her parents, Earl A. and Ruth V. Wheeler, and her brother Windsor E. Wheeler and is survived by her husband of 67 years, Norman E. Long, her daughter Leslie D. Long and son-in-law, Manuel Sosa Jr. Millicent’s family will host a visitation on Thursday, May 7 at Roeder Mortuary from 5 to 7 pm and a funeral service on Friday, May 8 at All Saints Episcopal Church at 11 am. Millicent will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery on a future date.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Operation Smile or to Doctors without Borders are preferred.
