Merlin E. Eichner

Merlin Elmer Eichner, age 80, of Bellevue, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2026. He was born on October 5, 1945, in Omaha, Nebraska.

Merlin was a man whose life was defined by hard work, unwavering faith, and an abiding love for his family. Raised on a farm, he learned early the value of dedication and perseverance. As a young man, he worked alongside his father running a neighborhood gas station and helped his mother in her diner, experiences that shaped the work ethic he carried throughout his life. He spent the majority of his career as a mechanic, taking pride in honest work and the satisfaction of helping others keep their lives moving.

Outside of work, Merlin found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved animals, classic cars, John Wayne movies, and never missed an episode of Walker, Texas Ranger. His family may not have always appreciated every vehicle he brought home—especially the old orange Dodge Dart—but his love for cars was simply part of who he was. He was known for his quick wit, sharp mind, and generous heart. His advice often came in the form of a simple phrase: “Can’t isn’t a word.” It was more than a saying; it was how he lived his life.

Merlin also had a mischievous sense of humor that those closest to him will never forget. More than one nervous boyfriend was greeted at the door by Merlin wearing nothing but cowboy boots and his underwear, a prank that never failed to break the ice and became one of the many stories his family will cherish for years to come.

Above all else, Merlin believed that family was life’s greatest blessing. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon; his many children, each of whom he loved wholeheartedly; and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him endless pride and joy.

Merlin was preceded in death by his infant daughter and his parents. While his family grieves his absence, they find comfort in knowing he has been reunited with those who went before him.

His family will forever remember the man who could fix almost anything, make them laugh when they needed it most, and remind them that “Can’t isn’t a word.” They will carry his strength, his faith, and his love with them always.

Funeral/visitation services to celebrate Merlin’s life will be held on 11:00 AM Saturday (8/1/2026) at Resurrection Lutheran Church 153 S. McKenna Ave Gretna, Nebraska 68028. Family and friends are invited to join in celebrating a life well lived and a man who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

The family gratefully welcomes flowers. Those who wish may also make a memorial donation in Merlin’s honor to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.

Above all, the family asks that those wishing to honor Merlin’s memory do so by spending time with their loved ones, offering a helping hand to a neighbor, or simply remembering that you can do anything.
