Melvin “Mel” Young was born on April 6, 1944, to Emil and Naomi Blanche Young in Wathena, Kansas.  He passed away on October 13, 2022, in Lincoln Nebraska. Mel is survived by daughters Ashlee (Scott) and Sara; 4 grandchildren; family and friends. Mel is preceded in death by his parents, brothers William Leroy, Cecil and Kenneth; sisters Phyllis, Lydia; and 2 infant siblings.  

Mel graduated from Craig High School and attended college at Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, MO. After teaching for one year in Blakesburg, Iowa, Mel was drafted and served in the Army. He served as an E-5 Sergeant in Vietnam. He received multiple awards including the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the Vietnam Service and Campaign Medals. After Vietnam his career included insurance agent, insurance executive and mentor. Mel earned multiple advanced industry designations and performance awards.

His Graveside service will be held at 2 PM Thursday (10/20/22) at Omaha National Cemetery.
