Maxine K. Burke

Gretna, NE. Maxine Kay Burke, age 85, passed away peacefully at her home in Gretna on Tuesday, resulting from complications of heart disease. Maxine was born in Oxford, NE, to Louis H. and Emma M. Knipschild. She attended the Oxford Public Schools, graduating in 1958. On July 15, 1961, she married Jerry Burke. She lived in Gretna since 1963 raising her four children and handling the books at Burke Auto. Once the kids graduated high school, she was employed by St Patrick Church as the Director of the CCD program for 10+ years, followed by a variety of service roles at retail operations. She was also active with helping Jerry on the farm as needed. Maxine was a member of St. Patrick's Parish and will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother, as well as a kind and helpful sister, aunt and friend. Survivors include her children: David Burke, Gretna; Bridget (Michael) Chatterson, Gretna; and Audrey (Brad) Boehm, Hermosa, SD; grandchildren: Danielle (Zachary) Fehrman, Humble, TX; Jennifer Burke, Bellevue, NE; Jacob Burke, West Boylston, MA; Cody Boardman, Denver, CO; Nicholas (Zarina) Boardman, Gretna, NE; Seth Boardman, Omaha; NE, and Rebecca (Aaron) Whitlow, Martinsville, IN; and siblings: Arlene Dreher, Gretna, NE; Ardella (Clint) Olmsted, Arapahoe, NE; Donna Peitzmeier, Bancroft, NE. Preceded in death by her parents; husband Gerard “Jerry” Burke; son: Vincent Burke; sisters Joyce Knipschild and Delores (Norman) Robertson; brother-in-law Vernon Dreher; brother-in-law Jim Peitzmeier.

Visitation 5:00 - 7:00 PM with Rosary 6:30 PM Monday (8/24/2026) with Funeral Mass 10:30 AM Tuesday (8/25/2026) all at St. Patrick Catholic Church 508 Angus St. Gretna, NE; Burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Gretna, NE with lunch afterwards at St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
