Mary "Janet" (Schmit) Bergmann was born March 22, 1946 to Aloysius and Elizabeth "Betty" (Scholtes) in Omaha. She was raised in Omaha and graduated from Bishop Ryan High School in 1964. The family moved to Murdock in 1964 where she met her future husband, Ronald Bergmann, at St. Patrick's Church in Manley, Nebraska. Ron and Jan both attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Ron drove her to school. The two were married October 19, 1968 in Blair, Nebraska at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church. They lived in Manley, Nebraska and had two girls, Michele and Vanessa. They purchased a home in Gretna in 1973 and had a third child, Brian. In 1998 they moved out to outskirts of Gretna.
Janet worked until she had children and then stayed at home to raise them. She was a 4-H leader and active at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Gretna. At St. Patrick's she was an EME and taught CCD and was a CCD Coordinator in the 80s. Her hobbies included sewing and quilting, genealogy, scrapbooking and spending quality time with her family. She was a member of the Monday Morning Quilters group and the Nebraska Quilt Guild. As a 4-H leader she taught life skills of cooking, baking, canning, sewing, home decor and gardening.
In the 90s she took over her mother and mother-in-law's genealogy books and expanded them. She loved to travel over the midwest to find family members and take pictures of the gravestones. She has collected over 1000 related families in her genealogy binders.
She was passionate about sewing and won best in show in the county fair. She has finished and started numerous quilts.
Family time included camping, boating/water skiing, traveling, hiking, and playing cards. Ron and Jan went to Mexico in the winter every year for 3 weeks to get away from the cold. She treasured time with her sisters scrapbooking and attending quilt retreats. Jan enjoyed taking two week camping trips across the US. In more recent years she enjoyed family trips to Jackson Hole, Newport Oregon and Glacier National Park.
She was preceded in passing by her mother Elizabeth, father Aloysius, brothers Joseph, Jerome, Jerry and Jim, sister Judith. She is survived by her husband Ronald, daughters Michele (Richard Spomer), Vanessa, son Brian (Kelly) and granddaughters Alexa (Antoine Pautrat) and Paige. Sisters Jeanne and husband Gary Hall, Joanne and husband Randy Mueller, Joyce and husband Mike Smith; brother John and wife Judy; many nephews and nieces and other relatives and friends.
