Marilyn (Nickie) Rose DeTurk, 94, passed away September 21, 2023 at Brookstone Meadows in Elkhorn, NE, surrounded by her family. Marilyn was born in Shelby, NE on September 5, 1929, to Rosalie E. (Zwiener) and Louis O. Nicolas. She graduated from Shelby high school in 1946. Marilyn had two older brothers, Louis, who served and died in the Philippines in World War II, and Lee, who established Shelby Lumber Company.
Marilyn married Gene C. DeTurk on April 21, 1949. Gene died in 1984. They had seven children and raised them in the towns of Cedar Bluffs, North Bend, and Wayne, NE. Marilyn was a member of the St. Mary’s Ladies’ Guild in Wayne and served as president. She was also on the annual committee to make 250 pounds of hamburger into “taverns” for the church food stand at the Wayne County Fair. She retired and moved back to Shelby in 1990. Marilyn spent the last 11 years of her life living at Silver Ridge Assisted Living in Gretna, NE. before moving to Brookstone Meadows earlier this year. Marilyn was known as a loving wife and mother. Her life revolved around her children. She was a wonderful mother, mentor, and friend who will be dearly missed. She was known for her generosity, love, and respect for all, such as always providing a meal to a homeless person.
Marilyn is survived by five of her children: David (Linda) of Omaha NE, Dwayne (Cheryl) of Salina KS, Bonnie (Don) Hendricksen of Wimauma, FL, Rose (Dave) Beaudette of Norfolk NE, and Ted (Dawn) of Fremont NE. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, grandparents, husband, and two daughters, Peggy Kemp and Jenni DeTurk.
VISITATION Monday 5-7 with the VIGIL 7 PM at Roeder Mortuary Gretna Chapel; FUNERAL MASS 10 AM Tuesday (9/26/2023) at St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church 7790 S 192nd St. Gretna, NE with luncheon immediately following mass; Interment Greenwood Cemetery, Wayne, NE.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the American Cancer Society.
