Luevenia Anita Vaughn was the fifth child of 8 born to the late Ollie Dean Vaughn Sr. & Evelyn Lena Vaughn.
Mrs. Vaughn thought her first name would be hard to spell so she was always known by Anita. Named after her Paternal Grandmother.
Anita was raised in Omaha Nebraska, where she accepted Christ at an early age and joined Morning Star Baptist Church. She was a member of the choir and after she was married to Benny Valentine Sr., they became Deacon & Deaconess.
Anita attended Highland elementary before moving from south Omaha in 1965. She then attended Technical High School from grades 7-12. She's graduated with the class of 1976.
After High school her career took her to Mutual of Omaha. She worked there for many years often bringing work home letting Poochie earn a few dollars helping her. She had many good friends there. A few even took a trip to California and Mexico together.
Anita excelled as a softball player. She played with many ladies and mixed teams. She often traveled to Denver and Topeka for tournaments. She could play at any position on the field and Daddy would always say $20 for a home run. I don't know how much money he paid out every season, but it was almost guaranteed every game.,then she could throw somebody out from anywhere on the field. Beverly was the back catcher.
Anita was inducted into the Women's Hall of Fame, thanks to Mr. Louis Arterberry Sr.
Music a big part of our family. You could pull up in Anita's driveway and you would hear her blasting Gospel or the 70's. She enjoyed it and still had a cassette from 1999 that she Beverly and Annie made singing Silent Night while Beverly was on an organ with no training whatsoever. We laughed through it, started over and over but we finally got the harmony together. It was beautiful. Her tape will always be with her.
MS hit Anita in her 30's. She had to leave her job at Mutual of Omaha but she worked a few temporary jobs until it got to be too much. The first few years took getting used to and she was married, then after her divorce, she adjusted very well and began living a wonderful independent life with minimal help. She always had a positive outlook on life. Nita was high spirited. She would tell Bro. Bunch she was gonna run him over, he messed with her all the time. She loved her snacks, Popeyes chicken and visits from family, Dec. John & Sis Jones and her favorite caregiver Trevor.
There is so much more but not enough paper to say who Anita truly was to us all. Her life can be written as a novel.
She earned her wings and she was well prepared to fly. 🪽
