Omaha - Lois Maxcine Smith was born on November 13, 1946, in Braggadocio, Missouri, to the late William and Lela Mae Cloteal Jones-Harton. She was the cherished youngest of her siblings, and in addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her three brothers—W.L. Harton, Alfonso Harton, and Wilbert Harton—and her two sisters, Ethel Mae Rush and Twila Fay Chisem.
On August 21, 1973, Maxcine married the love of her life, Thatus Aluther Smith (Shane), in Omaha, Nebraska. Together, they shared 52 years of deep love, commitment, and devotion. Lois Maxcine Smith, affectionately known to all as “Mac” became a pillar of strength and warmth for her family. She was the favorite aunt—always ready with open arms, her heart, and her home. If any of her nieces or nephews needed a place to stay, Maxcine was there. Her home in Omaha was a safe haven, a place where family could find love, comfort, and care until they were able to stand on their own.
Beyond her nurturing spirit, Maxcine was known for her extraordinary culinary talents. She was an excellent cook who loved to prepare meals not only for her family but for friends, ensuring that no one ever left her table hungry. Maxcine opened her home to all, filling it with laughter, shared stories, and cherished memories. Her gatherings were filled with joy, where her loved ones could feel the embrace of her love, which was as boundless as her generosity.
Maxcine passed away peacefully on January 14, 2025, at her home, surrounded by her beloved family. Her departure has left an undeniable void, but the love she shared and the memories she created will forever be etched in the hearts of all who knew her.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Thatus (Shane) Smith; two sons, Thatus Smith III and La’Fons Smith; one daughter, Cloteal Smith—all of Omaha, Nebraska. Maxcine also leaves behind her dear sister, Doretha Visor, of Charleston, Missouri. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Isaiah Stricklin, Xaviance Smith, Fontrell Amick, Deablo Amick, Kamron and Kylon Zellner, Kalee Townsell, LaNyla Smith, Carmello, Ah’Monii, and Luvueye’Auh Collier. She also has great-grandchildren who will carry her memory forward: Himawarii Jade Stricklin, Kye’Trell Lorenzo Amick-Martinez, and Tai’saiah Terrell-Cole Stricklin. Also a heap of nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends
Lois Maxcine Smith’s life was a testament to love, family, and community. Her gentle soul, infectious smile, and unwavering support for those she loved will never be forgotten. She has been called home, but her spirit remains with us, living on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all those who were blessed to know her. Rest in paradise, Maxcine—your love will continue to guide us.
