Kenneth P. (Ken) Self

Gretna -

Kenneth (Ken) Paul Self age 72 was born on October 10th, 1952, in Omaha, NE to Floyd and Kathryn (Pavich) Self. Ken graduated from Westside High School in 1970 and joined the United States Marine Corp after graduation, serving until 1974. After proudly serving his country, he returned to Omaha and worked various construction jobs. Ken and Bonnie met at her birthday party in April of 1977. Little did they know they would be married a year later on May 6, 1978. On October 16, 1978, Ken had the honor of joining the Omaha Fire Department. He proudly served the Omaha community for 28 and half years and retired as a Captain in 2007. Ken and Bonnie were married for 46 years. They were deeply in love and welcomed 4 children into their marriage. Ken and Bonnie built their home in Gretna with the help of friends and family in 2000, which Ken was very proud of. Ken loved being a Dad and helping his kids in various sports when they were younger. Later in life Ken enjoyed going to see his 6 grandchildren in their sporting events. Besides spending time with his family, Ken enjoyed fishing, football, going to the gym, watching Jeopardy, westerns, Yellowstone, Survivor, and was an avid reader. Ken also enjoyed travelling with Bonnie, especially to Grand Falls Casino Resort in Larchwood, IA, Minnesota and many other states. Ken spent many years on the Omaha Fire Fighters Credit Union Board. Ken also enjoyed attending meetings and gatherings for the Omaha Fire Department Helmet Club and Union, the Gretna Marine Corp League, and the Gretna American Legion. He also served on the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Nebraska chapter. Ken was a great leader in life. He mentored young recruits at a Marine Corp Camp, influenced and changed the lives of many fire fighters, and was a great role model to his kids. He was loved by many and will be forever missed.

Ken passed away on December 25th, 2024 after a short, courageous battle with cancer. Survived by wife Bonnie, children Colleen (Russ) Eddy of Gretna, NE, Jake (Ashley) of Gretna, NE, Chelsea (George Tanguy) Self of Tracy, MN, Zach (Amanda) of Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Parker and Nora Eddy, Jett, Ryker, and Everly Self, and Hadley Self; his brother Bob (Kathryn) Self, many other family and friends.

Visitation Wednesday (1/1/25) 2:00 - 4:00 PM at Roeder Mortuary. Funeral Service 11:00 AM Thursday ( 1/2/2025 ) at Journey Church 20020 Hampton Dr. Gretna. Memorials to Gretna American Legion & VFW.
