Katherine Maria Green was born the 5

th

of six girls to Elijah and Dora Johnson on December 16

th

, 1928. Early on Katherine had a love for education and English. She did so well in school she skipped the third grade. She went on to graduate from Omaha Technical High School in 1945. She had aspirations of becoming a registered nurse; however, the initiative for the RN program ended due to the end of the war effort and she was unable to pursue that goal. Katherine then began her career working as a housekeeper. She went on to work for Douglas County Hospital and in 1960 began work at the U.S. Postal Service where she worked for 31 years. She retired from the post office in 1992 and discovered that work was her hobby. She returned to work for 13 more years at the Red Cross.

Katherine was an avid reader. If she wasn’t reading a book she could be found reading the newspaper or studying her Bible and Sunday School lessons. She was a Jeopardy enthusiast and a

huge

fan of Wheel of Fortune. She also enjoyed sports of every kind.

Katherine was a

fan

-tastic cook! People everywhere enjoyed her Thanksgiving dressing, one of her specialties. Others of her specialties include: macaroni and cheese, scalloped potatoes, sweet potatoes, greens, fried, baked, and barbeque chicken, pies, and cakes including pineapple upside down cake, German-chocolate cake, and 7-up cake and a myriad of other dishes.

Katherine was a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church before they erected the facility on John Creighton Blvd. She was a faithful member and servant of the Mt. Nebo Sunday School, Missions Guild, and Usher Board and served in various capacities over the years. Katherine was involved in the Urban League Guild as well as other civic groups.

She was a lover of humanity. She went out of her way to help others and extend opportunities to them. She lived by

The Golden Rule

would have them

do unto you.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters: Carrie, Helen, Emma, Mary, and Lillian; one infant brother; children: David Eugene Green and Sharon Lynne Green. She is survived by son, Michael Leroy Green, daughter-in-law, Sharon Patricia Green, and daughter, Lisa Joyce Green; fourteen grandchildren; 28 great grand-children; and 2 great-great grandchildren, and a host of other family, friends, and loved ones.

VISITATION Thursday, July 28, 2016 from 6-8pm at Roeder Mortuary 108th Street Chapel.  FUNERAL SERVICE Friday, July 29, 2016 at 10am Mt. Nebo Baptist Church 5501 N. 50th Street.  Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.
