Karla Rae Christensen Baker was born March 17, 1950, in Redfield, Iowa, and passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2022.
Karla and her mother moved to Omaha when she was a child, and Karla went to North High School. After high school, she went to Capitol Beauty School and began a career as a cosmetologist, retiring when her first child was born.
She moved into a career in retail in the mid-1990s, most notably working for many years in the fine-gifts department at Borsheims.
Karla had many hobbies. She was a lifelong, avid reader. She hosted numerous dinner parties and cooked many family holiday spreads; enjoyed gluten-free baking; and most days could be found watching the Food Network. In retirement, she began taking photographs of flowers during neighborhood walks and sharing them on social media. She loved shopping and style, and never lost interest in the beauty industry, keeping her cosmetology license current her whole life.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Karla’s honor to the Inner Beauty Salon at Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center, which provides beauty and hair services to cancer survivors, in care of the Methodist Hospital Foundation, 8701 W. Dodge Road, Suite 450, Omaha, NE, 68114. Online donations can be made at
