Joyce Hamilton

Joyce was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on August 2, 1946, to John Hamilton and Margaret McClure Hamilton. Joyce and her mother arrived in America by boat on November 1, 1947. Her father joined them in 1949 after finishing his Army duty during the occupation of Germany. In 1952, Joyce’s brother David joined the family. In 1955 the family sailed back to Scotland. In 1956, they once again returned to Omaha. She always clung to her Scottish heritage. She was down right proud of it!  

Joyce was a graduate of Central High School and the University of Nebraska at Omaha.  She taught Business Education at Bryan High from 1968-1975. Joyce and Timothy Barnes were married in 1972 and divorced in 2004. Three children were born to them…Ian, Troy and Carmen. 

Joyce enjoyed gardening, cooking and canning. She was known for her famous Blueberry Pies and her frugality. 

She had nine major spin-off cancers in her lifetime all related to the Lynch Syndrome, a genetic cancer. She survived them all. She liked to laugh and give a thumbs up and say, “I’m still standing!” But in the end, Alzheimer’s was her final battle. 

Joyce’s Lord was very personal and precious to her. As a teenager, she gave her life to Christ. But it was many years later, in her fifties, that she seriously sought her Lord and asked that He renew a steadfast spirit within her. She became a member of Community Bible Church in November of 2019.  The Lord walked with her through her remaining life. Joyce was blessed by many friends and her family. Ian (son) and Sara Barnes, Andrew & Isaac (grandsons); Troy (son) and Leita Barnes, Anya, Malcolm, Broderick, Sylvie, Quincy (grandchildren); Carmen Barnes (daughter) and Sean Hurdle.  

Visitation 10 AM Thursday (12/14/2023) at Community Bible Church (3616 S 132nd St Omaha, NE 68144) with funeral service 11 AM. Luncheon after services with burial to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorials to the family for later designation.
