Joseph Michael “Joe” Mattice, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and an ardent model plane, train, and car enthusiast. Passed away peacefully at home on June 24, 2024, at the age of 78. Born to Lois (Mattice) and William “Bill” Staudenraus in Detroit, MI on June 16,1946.
In the summer of 1965, Joe enlisted in the United States Navy where he went on to serve as an engineer on the commissioning crew of the Fast Attack Nuclear Submarine, USS Bergall SSN 667 based in Connecticut. He extended his service in 1969 and was Honorably discharged in 1971.
A dedicated employee of Omaha Public Power District, Joe worked as a Health Physicist at the Nuclear Power Plant in Fort Calhoun Nebraska and retired after 35 years of service in 2006.
Joe’s fascination with learning sparked from his love for cars, trains (full size and scale) and flying radio-controlled airplanes.
In retirement, his favorite places at home were either sitting outside on the patio furniture, enjoying the landscaped yard with his wife and dog Oliver, or working on his train board in the basement with two cats, Daisy and Noodles, watching nearby. He spent countless hours at his workbench crafting intricate model railroad layouts, featuring replicas of railway stations and roundhouses with detailed landscapes and back drops. He loved to share his love for these hobbies with his sons and grandchildren.
Additionally, during covid, he learned how to fly an airplane by watching instructional videos presented by certified flight instructors.
Joe’s love for learning and model railroading was matched only by his love for his family.
Joe is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Becky; their sons, Mitchell (Megan) Mattice and Clayton Mattice (Jenny Grant); brother-in law Bill Baker; sisters Pamela Rebori and Mary Ann Swick; and two grandchildren Makayla and Milo Mattice. He leaves behind a wide circle of friends and fellow enthusiasts who will miss his warmth, generosity and humor.
The family will receive visitors for a Celebration of Life vigil service at Roeder Mortuary Omaha Ne – No Flowers, but plants are welcome.
