Dear family and friends,
I am grateful to share these memories as we come together to honor and celebrate the remarkable life and enduring legacy of Joseph Conley Sr. Each of us holds unique memories of Daddy—known lovingly as Uncle Joe by his many nieces, nephews, and great-grandnieces and nephews—and it is in sharing these reflections that we keep his spirit alive in our hearts.
Joseph Conley Sr.'s legacy shines in the lives of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren. He was a welcoming presence, his beautiful smile and lesson-filled stories making all in his company feel at home. Many will recall how he could “shoot the breeze,” making everyone feel seen and cared for, always a gentleman with a kindhearted word. One of his favorite phrases, “I’m just a little shorty,” would bring laughter whenever someone commented on his height—a small glimpse into his warmth and humility. If you have a favorite story of Joe, please feel free to share it with us; his kindness touched us all.
Daddy was the last of his siblings—Henry, Lucy, and Liz—to transition, joining their parents, Mary Leonard and Joseph Henry Conley, in peace. He often said he never thought he would live beyond 64, let alone reach 85, and we are thankful for the many years we shared with him. His large family includes many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended relatives, each of whom was dear to him.
At the heart of his legacy are his eight children:
- Joseph Ray Conley (Sonya) and their children: Joseph Ray Conley Jr., Jasmine Conley, and Shanica Capers; their grandchildren: Dynasty, Janihia, Kendrick, Eliyanah, Dontrell J., and Zyanah; and great-grandchildren: Zahmir, Thiry, and Roman.
- James Conley
- Cornell Conley
- Gail White (Leonard) and their children: Durelle White, Desmond White, and Chynna White; their grandchildren: Durelle Jr. and Dacion, and great-grandchild Kah'Mari.
- Michael Conley (Monica)and their children: DeShawn Perry Sr., Michael (Sara) Perry, Montray (Shantae) Perry-Chester Sr., Lucresha Perry-Chester; their grandchildren: DeShawn Perry Jr. (preceded in death), Jordan, Kaliyah, Trinity, Jurnee, Zariah, Montray Jr., and Jakai
- Deborah Dancer (Barry) and their children: James White, Ashley (TeeJay) Dancer, Robert (Rebecca)Dancer, Rinnah Dancer, and Ronen Dancer; their grandchildren: EJ, Jackson, Kashten, and Miles.
- Joseph Conley Jr. (Fregedam) and their children: Nathaniel Asfaw, Hakim Conley, Zayna Conley, and Ezekiel Conley.
- Brian Conley (preceded in death)
Daddy was survived by his wife, Betty.
Let us remember the gentle strength, humor, and guidance Daddy offered to each of us. His memory will forever live in our hearts, and his legacy is the love and care we continue to share with one another. Please continue to cherish and share your stories, as together we celebrate a life so well lived.
With gratitude and love
