Joseph L. Carney

Joseph L. Carney was born on November 24, 1949, in Kearney, Nebraska, and passed away peacefully at home on June 27, 2026, after a courageous 2½ year battle with glioblastoma, with his devoted wife, Mary, and other loved ones by his side.

Joe was born to Margaret (Etzelmiller) and Lester Carney. His father passed away from cancer three months before Joe's birth, and Margaret raised Joe and his brother, Jim, on the family farm near Heartwell, Nebraska. Joe attended Heartwell Elementary School before moving to Minden when he was 15 years old. He graduated from Minden High School in 1968.

Joe proudly served in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1973. During his service, he was stationed aboard the submarine USS John C. Calhoun, an experience he remained proud of throughout his life. In recent years, he especially enjoyed reconnecting with his Navy shipmates and treasured the friendships they shared. In November of last year, Joe was presented a Quilt of Valor, awarded to veterans, surrounded by his family.

Following his military service, Joe attended the Lincoln School of Commerce, where he earned a paralegal degree, launching a career in paralegal and financial services. He later completed his bachelor’s degree in business from Bellevue University.

In 1980, Joe met his bride, Mary (Hughes), at a mutual friend’s wedding at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Battle Creek, Nebraska, where thirteen months later, they would marry—Joe didn't waste any time closing that deal. Together, Joe and Mary welcomed three children: Molly Claire, Kathleen Hughes, and Patrick Joseph. With his children, Joe shared his love of the Green Bay Packers, the Nebraska Cornhuskers and golfing.

Being a dad was the highlight of Joe's life—until his grandchildren were born! When “Papa Joe” learned of the birth of his first grandchild, Daisy Josephine, Joe simply said, "I think I am walking on air." That joy only grew when Fiona Wren was born and nothing made him happier than spending time with his granddaughters since their arrivals.

In 2020, Joe retired and spent his time chipping away at his “honey-do” list, working weekends at Memorial Stadium during Husker football games, and golfing at Ashland Country Club whenever possible. He was also engaged in service through Least of My Brethren, the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law: Jerry Hughes; and his brother-in-law: Bill Hughes. He is survived by his beloved wife: Mary Carney; his children: Molly (Thomas) Breslin, Katie (Logan) Caldwell, and Patrick Carney; his cherished granddaughters: Daisy Josephine and Fiona Wren; his brother: Jim (Kathy) Carney; his nephews: Joel (Shaini) Carney and Jeff Carney; as well as many nieces and nephews, brothers- and sisters-in-law, and extended family who loved him dearly.
