John H. "Joe" Verbeek

John H. "Joe" Verbeek of Gretna, Nebraska, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the age of 91. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, teacher, and friend, Joe lived a life marked by service, humility, and a steadfast commitment to the people and community he loved.

Born in 1934 on a farm near Firth, Nebraska, the long summer days in the field taught Joe the value of hard work, responsibility, and integrity at an early age-qualities that shaped every chapter of his life. He graduated from Firth High School in 1951 and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1952. He served in both active and reserve duty during the Korean War era. Upon returning home, he completed his degree at Peru State Teachers College and later earned a master's degree from Kearney State College.

In 1956, Joe married the love of his life, Janice "Jan" Verbeek. High school sweethearts, Joe and Jan built a life rooted in partnership, purpose, and deep affection for their family. Together, they moved to Gretna and began teaching at Gretna High School in 1960- launching educational careers that would span more than three decades and touch generations of students.

Joe taught industrial arts, physical education, computer applications, building and construction, metals, drafting, and driver's education. He also coached thousands of athletes in basketball, football, track, baseball, and golf. A mentor known for patience, humor, and quiet wisdom, he believed deeply in the potential of young people. His influence stretched far beyond the classroom-measured not only in accolades but the stories and successes of former students who never forgot his efforts. If you visit a local golf course, chances are you'll see a swing improved by the guidance of Joe's keen eye and steady golf practice, which he continued to play well into his late 80's.

Joe was deeply involved in the Gretna community. He served as mayor for 10 years and helped guide the growth of the town he proudly called home for more than 64 years. He was honored to contribute to the progress of the community and cherished the relationships he built along the way.

Joe is survived by two of his daughters and their spouses-Annette Bockman; Jodi and Don Oakerson; and son-in-law Neil Wagner. He was a loving grandfather to David, Adam, Ashley, Ben, Brett, Paige, Hannah, Chelsea and Ian and was a great-grandfather to 12 youngsters. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jan; their daughter Vicki Wagner; and his three brothers, William, Ira, and Ronald.

Visitation will take place December 12th from 5-7pm at Roeder Mortuary in Gretna. Funeral services will be held Gretna United Methodist Church Saturday December 13th at 10am. Interment will follow at the cemetery.
