Jim A. McElwain

James “Jim” Alvin McElwain, age 87, of Springfield, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on February 1, 1938, near Marshfield, Missouri, he had fond memories of growing up on the farm. Jim lived a life defined by hard work, devotion to family and a deep love for the simple joys of yard and home.

Jim honorably served in the United States Army from October 1961 to October 1963, working as a mechanized infantry tank driver. He received a good conduct metal as well as qualified as an expert with both pistol and rifle.

Jim spent 35 years of his life working as a plant mechanical manger for Metropolitan Utilities District, keeping the clean water flowing for Omaha.

Throughout his life, Jim found happiness in the outdoors and hands-on work. He loved his monthly M.U.D. lunches with his retired co-workers, camping with his wife and friends, traveling, and time at home. He also enjoyed classic Fords and John Deere tractors and time with family.

He is survived by his beloved wife: Monzella “Kitty” McElwain; and his brother: John. Jim was a proud father to Jim (Ginny); and grandsons: Jimmy (Brooke) and Josh; and great-grandson: Kaiden. Also survived by extended family, Kitty’s children: Nancy (Dan) Metzger, Judy (John) Mintzmyer, Harald (Karee) Nielsen, and Amy (John) Schmohr; and 11 grandchildren: Joshua, Gavin, Angelica, Michael, Allen, Christopher, Cody, Ivee, Bree, Lance and Amanda; and 16 great-grandchildren.
