Janice A. Recek

Janice “Jan” Ann Recek (Bausch) passed away May 18th after a short battle with cancer. Jan was a much-loved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and wife.

Jan was the second of five children, born in Columbus, Nebraska, on November 1, 1946, to Harold and Lillian “Lill” Bausch. After attending a square dance in 1952, Harold and Lill began what became a lifelong love of square dancing — calling, teaching, writing and recording dances, and organizing events across the region. Jan and her siblings grew up in the square dance community, traveling the country with their parents to attend many of the events Harold and Lill helped lead.

Jan graduated from Leigh High School in Leigh, Nebraska, in 1965, where she served as a majorette. She kept her batons throughout her life and loved sharing stories of marching and twirling — especially the nights when the batons were lit on fire.

At the age of 19, Jan married her first husband and together they had a daughter, Michelle Kristine and then a son, Matthew Edward. After being a single mom for a few years Jan met and married Curtis “Curt” Recek in 1982 after which, they bought a small house in Fremont. They worked together to build onto their new home which they lived in for over 35 years.

Jan held several jobs in her lifetime, mostly on in the medical field. She worked for many years at the hospital in Fremont doing medical billing where she won several employee awards. She went on serve as office manager for a group of surgeons and finally for an independent practitioner in Omaha before she retired.

In her later years Jan loved spending time with her grandsons and great grandson. She was very close to all her siblings, nieces and nephews and would often travel to attend weddings, graduations and anniversaries.

Jan dedicated many hours to volunteer work, including at the Fremont hospital and with Al-Anon family groups, where she was a member for 53 years.

Jan will be remembered for her positivity, kindness, support, and the genuine care she showed to others. Friends and family will remember her as someone who listened, encouraged, and always showed upwith a smile and a hug.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and LillianBausch; her sisters, Christina Dupsky and Veronica Kauk; and her brotherinlaw, Doyle Kauk. She is survived by her husband, Curtis Recek; her daughter, Michelle DuBay (Tim); and her son, Matthew Michaelsen (Michele). She is also survived by her grandsons, Austin Fry (Jessica), Ethan Jordan, Wyatt Michaelsen, and Quinn Michaelsen; her greatgrandson, Aiden Fry; her brother, Philip Bausch (Jeannette); her sister, Deanna Bausch; and several nieces and nephews.
