Age 96 - Herbert was born March 21, 1927 in St. Joseph Missouri to parents Harry Brown and Elizabeth Yancy Brown. He accepted Christ at an early age at Quinn Chapel AME Church in Sedalia, Missouri, where he attended with his family and participated in programs. He attended primary school in a one-room schoolhouse, walking with his siblings and cousins and classmates from the family farm. As a very young man, he showed willingness to work at his jobs and chores, such as watching and monitoring the turkey flock with strong binoculars, weeding the garden rows and fetching, feeding the farm animals and when time permitted, he loved playing with his younger brother Howard and their wagon. His Uncles, Aunts and other family, clergy and friends that lived in the area helped to shape the values and beliefs he held and the man he would become.
He attended CC Hubbard High School and graduated with a high standing. He went on to study carpentry at the Kansas Technical Institute in Topeka, Kansas. He worked at many projects and jobs in the area, with his siblings, father Harry, Uncles and Teachers, including at Meadow Gold in Sedalia. He then served proudly in the Korean war as a Communications Officer. After his end of service in 1954, he returned stateside and soon moved to Omaha, along with three of his siblings and their Mother.
He became a nurses’ aide and worked at the VA Hospital for several years, went on to be a Letter Carrier. Once retired from there, he worked another 20 years as a bus driver for Omaha Public Schools. He often worked two jobs, existing for years on about five hours of sleep a night. He then worked to deliver Meals on Wheels until the pandemic forced him to retire in 2020 at age 93. Throughout all of this, he remained an avid gardener of vegetables and loved growing flowers, especially on his 'half whiskey barrels' on his front porch.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, and seven siblings. To cherish his memory he leaves his Beloved Sister Geneva Everett of Topeka Kansas, daughters Marquita Graves (Dominic), Blandina Rose-Willis (Richard), Lynda V. Williams, seven grandchildren and a Loving Host of Nieces and Nephews, cousins and dear friends.
