Helyn Zoe McDermott Ludvik passed away peacefully with loved ones at her bedside and with the care of hospice in her home.
Our mom, Helyn McDermott Ludvik was born on June 2, 1930, the seventh child of Zoa and John McDermott. Mom was born and raised on the family farm in Wood River, NE. Having been born in 1930, Mom experienced the hardships and the drought of the depression years. With the encouragement of her mother, Mom’s love of the fine arts grew to her pursuing a career in performing arts, which resulted in singing on a radio station in Salt Lake City and an album recording. Mom combined her performing arts education with the “steady” vocation training of the skills of short hand, typing and office management. It was a rare opportunity for a Nebraska farm girl to attend a Catholic women’s college near Salt Lake City, UT. After two years of college, Mom returned home to care for her parents and to begin her professional career at the Naval Ammunitions Depot in Hastings, NE.
Seeking career advancement, Mom moved to Omaha, Ne and began working at Omaha University. While working at the university, Mom met George Ludvik, the love of her life, and in 1955, they were married.
In addition to supporting her business partner (Dad), in his consulting business in animal nutrition food sciences; Mom enjoyed multiple interests; raising her family, private piano teacher who hosted piano recitals in her home, 4-H leader, and extraordinary executive administrative assistant, recognized with multiple awards including: The University of Nebraska Board of Regents commendation for meritorious service and dedication to improving the quality of the University. Remembered for her being a mentor, confidant/counselor and beloved teacher, Mom’s own piano students wrote in a commendation plaque, “You planted the seed of the notes that we know. Our memories of you and your supportive warm smile, will always be with us no matter the miles.”
Upon retiring, Mom and Dad loved spending their time with family and friends, making several trips across the country.
Mom is preceded in death by Dad, her husband of 68 years and is survived by her four children; daughters Cynthia (Truckenbrod), Elizabeth Ludvik and Marilee Ludvik and son George Ludvik and wife, Julie, as well as 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
