Eugene Matthew Eckel (Gene) (Geno) was born January 11, 1971 to the parents of Keith and Elaine (Colgan) Eckel. He was the 4th of 4 children and was adored by his parents and older siblings. His mother would often say what a beautiful baby he was.
Born in Glenwood, IA where he spent two years of his life, his family then moved to Omaha, NE where Gene attended elementary, middle and Central High School which he graduated from in 1989.
Gene attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in English. During this time, he served with the Army National Guard-Nebraska (1989-1994), and was also a proud member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
After watching LA Law when he was a kid, Gene knew he wanted to be an attorney. He pursued his dream and earned his J.D. degree from Creighton University. Over the course of 20 years, Gene built a successful practice becoming a respected and trusted attorney in Real Estate Law. He was passionate about making a difference in the area of landlord tenant law. He was a member of the Nebraska Apartment Association and served on the Board of Directors.
Gene was a devoted husband, father, brother, friend, and fraternity brother. He leaves behind to cherish his memory wife: Medea Eckel; son: Ryan Eckel; siblings: Kate Reynolds Eckel, David Eckel, Nancy Getscher; brother-in-law: Jason Reynolds; nephew: C.J. Getscher; niece: Sarah Getscher.
Gene’s spirit, his soul, his amazing ability to give is still within. It lives on in the stories people are sharing of how he touched their lives, in the love that is visible in the eyes of his family and friends, in the spirit and resilience of his son. Things will never be the same – but the world is better for the years Gene was here.
