Gary Lloyd Hartwig

Gary Lloyd Hartwig lost his battle with Alzheimers disease surrounded by the love of his family on Tuesday, November 1, 2022.

Gary grew up in the Dunlap, IA area; graduating from Dunlap High School in 1965. After high school, Gary went to Midwestern College in Denison, IA where he played football. They never lost a game. He was in the Army Reserve and was activated to go to Vietnam to serve his country in 1968 and was wounded in action in 1969.  He was awarded a Silver Star, Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

After Vietnam, Gary settled in to work at the United States Postal Service for 33 years. Gary met his wife Rose in 1970 and they were married in 1972. They moved to Gretna, NE in 1973 and had three children.

He enjoyed many things including magic tricks, The Far Side comics, motorcycles, football, camping, bicycle riding, golf, darts, kayaking, comedy movies, oldies music, fitness, making popcorn balls, contemplating the universe, yard and board games, vacations, lots of family time and so much more. Gary loved animals and bonded with many family pets over the years. He had a great sense of humor and was known for being funny. He was also known for being kind, fair, and genuine.

He was a supportive husband and dad and a “Jack of all trades” around the house. After retirement he worked various jobs and helped his daughter, Andrea, with her business. He went on motorcycle trips with his son, Eric, and enjoyed yearly traditions with Alison, Stuart and Logan. He was a very proud grandpa and had a close relationship with his grandson, Logan.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Ethel (Olson) Hartwig and brother, Ronald Hartwig. He is survived by his wife Rose Hartwig; three children, Eric Hartwig, Alison and her husband Stuart Wilson, and Andrea Hartwig and her fiancé Jeremy Richmond and grandson, Logan Wilson; his brother, Allen Hartwig and his wife Ruth and sister-in-law, Delores Hartwig and many wonderful in-laws, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.

He has finally found peace after Alzheimer’s Disease. We are comforted knowing Gary Hartwig knows who Gary Hartwig is again.

“You've got to know when to hold 'em

Know when to fold 'em

Know when to walk away

And know when to run

You never count your money

When you're sittin' at the table

There'll be time enough for countin'

When the dealin's done”

~from Kenny Rogers, The Gambler
