Omaha - Eugene “Gene” Harvey Wahl was born on November 24th 1933 to Harvey and Olive (nee Riley) Wahl in Atkinson Nebraska. Gene died on August 10th 2023 at Echo Hills Memory Care in Omaha Nebraska and went to his Heavenly home.
Gene attended Atkinson Public Schools where he received his kindergarten through twelfth grade education. Gene worked in the barber shop shining shoes and boots and cleaning. Gene also worked in the hay fields driving teams of horses and helping in gathering the hay crops. In high school Gene worked in the IGA grocery store for Colonel and Anna Spence.
Upon graduation, Gene joined the Navy in 1952 and served three years and ten months on the Destroyer DD-752 USS A.A. Cunningham. Gene’s ship saw action in Korea and the ship received the honor of firing the last shots of the Korean War. Gene was honorably discharged as a Second Class Radarman on May 31st 1956.
Gene returned home and then came to Omaha Nebraska to begin work at Western Electric. Gene started as a supplier for an assembly line of women, putting together telephone parts. Gene moved up to a repair man while attending Radio Electronic School where he later graduated. Gene then became a tester and continued as a tool dye and machinist until retiring in January 1993 under Lucent Technologies. In retirement Gene transported cars and vans for local car companies.
Gene met Sharon Lee in May of 1955 and they were married on December 6th 1958. To this union two sons were born; Russell Alan and James Arthur. Gene and Sharon raised their sons in Maple Village in Omaha Nebraska where they lived for 60 years. Gene and Sharon enjoyed traveling and camping; Gene enjoyed hunting and fishing. Gene and Sharon traveled to many reunions of the USS A.A. Cunningham with fellow shipmates. Gene also enjoyed watching the Husker football team.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents, brother Arthur “Pete” (Beverly) Wahl, sister Gloria Anna (Edward) Schmuecker, and brother in-law, Kenny Haas. Gene is survived by his wife of 64 years Sharon, sons Russell (Laura) Wahl, James (Diana) Wahl, granddaughters Emalee Wahl, Sarah (Jeremy) Wahl, Jamie (Alex) Uram, and sister Marilyn Haas of West Pont Nebraska.
Visitation Monday 5 - 7 PM at mortuary. Funeral Service 10:00 AM Tuesday (8/15/23) at Roeder Mortuary. Interment Evergreen.
Memorial Park. Memorials to St. Mark Lutheran Church or Alzheimer’s Association.
