Esther Z. Hawkins

We gather here today to celebrate the life of a remarkable woman, Esther Zee Hawkins. A woman full of warmth, unwavering faith, deep love for her family, and a heart dedicated to serving others.

She was born in the small town of Spencer, Nebraska, to roots that shaped the woman she would become: grounded, compassionate, steady, and devoted to the people she loved. She had 9 other siblings, 5 brothers and 4 sisters, and her early years instilled in her a strength of family and a character of kindness that stayed with her throughout her life.

It was in Nebraska where she met the love of her life, Larry, a love she cherished deeply. Together, they built a life centered on love, faith, and family—three pillars that guided her every day. Their marriage was one of mutual respect, loyalty, and deep affection. When Larry preceded her in death this past April, a piece of her heart went with him.

She poured her whole heart into raising her children—Matthew and his wife Tracy, Andrew, and Sarah—whom she loved beyond measure. Her pride in them was unmistakable, and her love was unconditional—steady, reassuring, always present. Being their mom was one of her greatest joys.

She was also blessed with grandchildren who brought her immense happiness: Shelby and her husband Nick, and her grandsons Dalton and Seth. She loved them with all her heart. They were a source of laughter, purpose, and delight, and she cherished every moment she spent with them.

Her faith was the foundation on which she built her life. She loved her church and was an active part of it, living out her beliefs not only in worship but in service. Whether she was volunteering, offering a comforting word, or simply showing up for someone in need, she carried her faith with grace and humility. She didn’t just practice her beliefs—she lived them fully and beautifully.

To those who knew her, she was the first to offer support, the first to listen, the first to give. She had a gentle spirit that made others feel safe, seen, and loved. Her kindness wasn’t loud or showy—it was quiet, steady, and deeply genuine. That steady love made her cherished by many.

To her children, she was a source of strength and warmth. To Larry, she was a devoted partner and his greatest blessing. And to the rest of us, she was a bright light—someone whose presence made every room softer and every day better.

Her life is not defined by any hardship she faced, but by the love she gave, the lives she touched, and the legacy of faith, family, and compassion she leaves behind.

As we say goodbye today, let us not be filled with sorrow alone, but with gratitude. Gratitude for the years we were blessed with, for the memories we carry, and for the example she set. May we honor her by loving as fully as she did, serving as faithfully as she did, and living with the same quiet grace she showed every day.

Rest well, Mom. You have run your race with love. You are home now, reunited with Larry.
