Elwyn was born in Omaha, NE on July 27, 1927 to his parents Ernest and Ethel (Calliot) Mappes. He passed away on January 22, 2025. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Edith Arnold, daughters Kathy Bissel and Sharon Almond, as well as other beloved family and friends.

Elwyn is survived by his wife Shirley, daughter Carol Belt, son Mike Mappes (Chris Allen), step daughter Terri Smith (Jim), granddaughter Monica (Lee) Rao, great-granddaughter Kyndell, and many other grandchildren and great grandchildren.

After high school, he joined the Army, serving his country with honor, and after his service he was a coach driver for Greyhound for 33 years and later drove part-time for Chief/Arrow for another 20 years. He was dedicated to his church family at Christ Community Church. He enjoyed bowling and golf. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday Feb 19th, from 10:30-11:00 am, with  a memorial service at 11:00 am, both at the Christ Community Church. There will be miliary honors following the service, and a luncheon. His ashes will be privately interred at Omaha National Cemetery at a later date.
