Dona M. Short

Dona Short, 99 years old, passed away peacefully while living at Arbor Care Valhaven in Valley, Nebraska.

Dona was born on August 20, 1926 in Newman Grove, Nebraska. Her parents were Earl Hutt and Jorgene (Jenny) (Olsen) Hutt. Dona had three brothers (Veral, Donald and Rodney) and one sister (Janice). Dona lived in Newman Grove until she was 12 when the Hutt family moved to Omaha, Nebraska. Dona graduated from Omaha North High School in June 1944 with honors. While attending Omaha North High School, Dona met her future husband, Richard (Dick) Thomas Short. Dick and Dona were married in Omaha on March 21, 1946. After marriage, Dona spent a year in Alaska with Dick who was a 2nd Lieutenant pilot in the U.S. Army Air Force stationed in Anchorage, Alaska at Elmendorf Air Base.

Dick and Dona had three boys. Richard II (born 1947), Robert (1951-2008) and Ronald (born 1956).

Dona also leaves behind three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Dick and Dona raised their children in Omaha where Dona stayed home with the boys. Dona enjoyed raising her three boys, working in her yard, tending to her flowers in the yard and volunteering at Calvary Lutheran Church. She especially liked the annual family vacations to Alexandria, Minnesota to stay in a cabin on Lake Ida and fishing for walleye and northern pike.

In 1973, Dona joined the workforce to support sending Ron to college. Dona worked at J.C. Penny and Montgomery Ward in the furniture departments. She loved selling furniture and carpeting and received several awards and accolades for her work.

Dona is survived by her sons Richard II and Kathy Short, Ronald and Lynette Short and three grandchildren, Richard Short III, Kathryn Short and Allyson Vecchio (Aaron) and two great grandchildren.

Dona was preceded in death by her husband, Dick, in 2008, her son, Robert, in 2008 and grandson, William Short, in 1992.Dona’s sister and three brothers also preceded her in death.

Service 10:00 AM Friday (7/3/2026), with Visitation 30 minutes prior, at Roeder Mortuary 2727 N. 108th St. Omaha, NE; Burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha, NE.

In lieu of flowers memorials to Lauritzen Gardens-Omaha Botanical Center 100 Bancroft St. Omaha, NE 68108.
