It is with deep love and gratitude that we celebrate the life of Diane “Lady Di” Hansen, lovingly known as Mama, Gma, GG, Sister, Aunt Di, Mrs. H, Mrs. Santa, and Dear Friend. Diane lived a life rooted in faith, grace, wisdom, and unconditional love. With sparkling Irish eyes, a quick wit, and a gentle spirit, she made everyone around her feel welcomed, valued, and cared for. She was deeply beloved by all who knew her.
For 38 years, Diane taught elementary school in North Omaha, shaping generations of children with patience, encouragement, and kindness. In 1994, she received the Alice Buffett Outstanding Teacher Award in recognition of her dedication and impact. Beyond the classroom, she shared her gifts as a flautist, choir member, church/Benson Theatre volunteer, parenting class instructor, and mentor to countless young people, including many summer youth choir tours filled with music, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Her faith guided her daily life, and she began each day with devotion and prayer.
Diane also knew how to savor life’s simple joys. She loved nature, boating, camping, reading (though she famously insisted on reading the last page of every book—first—so she would know how the story ended), and, creating a warm, welcoming home where everyone felt safe and loved. An early bird by nature, she brought light and energy to each day. Her gatherings were filled with sunshine, music, laughter, gin and tonics, and the kind of hospitality that made people feel instantly at home.
More than anything, Diane will be remembered for the way she loved — wholeheartedly, faithfully, and without condition. She leaves behind a legacy of grace, beauty, compassion, faith, and joy that lives on through her family, friends, students, and all whose lives she touched.
She was preceded in death by husband of 47 years: Kirk; and is survived by her children: Kristin (Brian) Peterson, Amy Ryan; grandchildren: Kylie (Cameron), Amanda, Madison, Tag; 3 great-grandchildren; siblings: Richard (Christina) Shannon, Kim Hansen; and a host of other loving family and friends.
