David P. Salyards

7/8/1955 - 4/22/2017

Omaha - David Peter Salyards, 61, passed away April 22 following a short illness. A fourth-generation Nebraskan and lifelong resident of Omaha, Dave was born July 8, 1955, to Harry E. Salyards Sr. and Margaret E. Salyards. He was a 1973 graduate of Benson High School and a 1978 graduate of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, where his particular passion was music. A proud member of the Cornhusker Marching Band, he participated in a variety of other music ensembles. Indeed, music became his lifelong avocation; he was arranging a number of original works for keyboard, guitar, percussion and strings at the time of his untimely passing. Beloved husband, father, brother, and uncle, he married Cindy Welch on May 7, 1988. Their only child, Tim, was born September 11, 1993. Always a deeply-committed family man, he sustained his family first by becoming a Stay-At-Home Dad, and later by providing home-based care for his aging mother. The latter experience led to his finding his true calling in life: providing similarly devoted in-home care to the elderly through Home Instead. An avid reader, he had a lifelong interest in history, particularly Civil War history, fostered by researching details of the service of his Great Grandfather, Joseph Edward Salyards, veteran of the 34

Iowa cavalry, 1862-1865. He was a long-term fan of the Chicago Cubs, making his first trip to Wrigley Field with his new bride for their honeymoon. Later, he and his brother traveled to Boston together, where they attended games at Fenway Park, after which Dave adopted the Red Sox as his American League team. He is survived by his wife Cindy and son Tim, brother Harry and wife Phyllis, niece Shannon Salyards Burton and her husband Sean, and their children Samuel and Lily; nephew Scott Salyards, second cousin Ted Strasser and wife Phyllis, and several cousins.
