Darrell Dean Huss, 80, of Omaha, passed away on January 6, 2025, at Methodist Hospital. He was born on November 30, 1944, in Nebraska City to Herman and Alma (Schreiner) Huss. On September 4, 1971, Darrell married Cheryl Black in Seward, Nebraska, eloping to the local courthouse.
Darrell began working on the family farm and at Kimmel Orchards as a youth. He graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1963, where he played football and regularly beat Fairbury High School. He later attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, surviving on a quarter pounder per day, and ultimately graduated from Milford Technical School. He bought the then-named Metal Doors & Frame Company in 1979 and later purchased it from his original partner and built Metal Doors and Hardware Company into a highly successful family-owned business over the last 45 years. He continued to work at Metal Doors and Hardware, never retiring, despite his children’s hopes and wishes to get total control finally. Darrell enjoyed traveling with his wife both within the United States and worldwide. He was an enthusiastic golfer, continuing to play up until the year of his passing. He was also an avid sports fan, loved his Nebraska Cornhuskers, and was a season ticket holder for football, basketball, baseball, and volleyball. Unfortunately, despite frequent disappointment, he was a St. Louis Cardinals fan and followed the Boston Celtics since childhood. Ultimately, Darrell was a devoted husband and father. He loved his family with all his heart.
He is survived by his children: Matthew (Joanie) Huss, Michael (Theresa) Huss, Tamarae (Matt) Kock, and Travis Huss; grandchildren: Madison Miles, Sophia Huss, Emma Huss, Lexi Huss, Libby Huss, Sami Huss, Macey Kock, Chloe Kock, Liam Kock, Elizabeth Huss, and Ellie Kock; siblings: Ruby Meyer and Alice (Rinehart) Kruse; sister-in-law: Marilyn Black; brother-in-law: Steve (Shirley) Black; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Rose and Carl Gawart; sister: Norma and Delbert Wellsandt; brothers-in-law: Leonard Meyer and Clarence Black; and niece: Jennifer Kruse.
