Constance “Connie” Colleen (Malchow) Ullerich of Omaha, Nebraska, met her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ Sunday, March 30. She was 78 years old. Born May 21, 1946, in West Point, Nebraska, to Hugo and Norma (Kuester) Malchow, she was baptized June 23, 1946, and confirmed April 10, 1960, at Zion Lutheran Church in Wisner, where she also attended school. Connie graduated from Wisner High School in 1964, was a cheerleader, crowned the Homecoming queen and active in 4-H. She moved to Omaha to begin her 40-year nursing career, graduating in 1967 with a diploma nursing degree from the Immanuel Hospital School of Nursing. It was during her nurses training that she met some life-long friends, including the love of her life at a Foot Frolic at St. Mark Lutheran Church. Connie married Dean Ullerich Sept. 21, 1968 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Pender, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Omaha and raised three children, Cara, Mark and Lora.
Connie lived a life of service. She stayed home to raise her growing family, shuttling them to various school activities and events. She was a 4-H leader of the Busy Kittens 4-H club, one of the longest running 4-H clubs in Douglas County. During those years, she instilled the motto “to learn by doing” by teaching the art of sewing and baking.
Connie loved her Lord. She was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she volunteered in various capacities and committees, including organizing church suppers, visiting shut-ins, leading and participating in Bible study groups and teaching the youth. She was also active in the Lutheran Women in Mission League (LWML).
As her children grew up, Connie returned to nursing, initially working as a float pool professional and later, working in occupational health. She loved giving flu shots at various companies and organizations where she would often see and catch up with old friends, her children’s former classmates and others. She stayed active playing tennis and enjoyed country dancing with her partner, Dean, regularly showing off their dance floor skills at weddings and Bushwackers Dance Hall and Saloon in Ralston.
Connie relished her title of “Grammie Connie” and enjoyed spending time with her seven grandchildren. She rarely missed a birthday, game, band concert or rodeo and traveled as far as western Wyoming to cheer from the stands. She also perfected her “good eats” by making gorp bars, chocolate chip cookies and cupcakes with sprinkles on them. She included $2 bills in birthday cards and never missed an opportunity to remind them to “show Jesus’ love.”
Connie had a beautiful smile, a welcoming laugh and loved meeting new people as well as her family and friends. She had an incredible memory and could remember family history details as well as birthday dates, anniversaries, addresses and other vital information.
Despite her 2020 cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment, she remained positive, active and hopeful. She trusted in her doctors and remained steadfast in “God’s plan” until the very end.
Connie (Malchow) Ullerich is survived by husband of 56 years Dean; children Cara Sealock (Greg), Mark Ullerich (Melissa), and Lora Vohl (Kyle); seven grandchildren including Amanda Sealock, Hannah McDuffee (Zach), Micah Sealock, Reece Ullerich, Jace Ullerich, Gemma Vohl, and Hugh Vohl; sister-in-law Gail Malchow, sister- and brother-in-law Marie Kucera (Lyle); and nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents, infant brother Roger and older brother Doug Malchow.
