Carol Ann Mangimeli (Vencil, Tews)

Carol was born in Omaha, Nebraska on May 6, 1946 to Tony and Frances (Guncheck) Vencil.  She grew up surrounded by 21 nieces and nephews, and she loved them like younger siblings.  Carol was a cheerleader in high school and later helped start her sorority in college.  She graduated with a degree in education from Wayne State College and briefly taught at St. Joan of Arc before spending most of her teaching career in Waterloo.  During this time, Carol completed a Masters degree in education, and she became lifelong friends (and bridge partners) with many of her fellow teachers.

After having three children of her own, Carol met and married Jim Mangimeli, who was the father of two children.  She and Jim loved and raised their five children over nearly 34 years of marriage, and they later welcomed ten grandchildren.  Following her retirement, Carol enjoyed many hobbies, including scrapbooking, traveling, playing bridge, and spoiling her grandkids.

Involvement with the Catholic Church was a large part of Carol’s life.  She was an active member at St. John’s in Valley and assisted with several of the ministries there, including service on the parish council, decorating the church for Christmas, and teaching a variety of classes with Jim by her side.  Carol also traveled to Medjugorje, and later convinced Jim to return with her on a second trip.  During their time in Europe, she and Jim spent time in Sicily and Rome while also visiting the shrines in Fatima and Lourdes.  Another adventure involved an Alaskan cruise that got even more exciting when Carol discovered that her passport had expired and the Canadians wouldn’t let her through.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Tony and Frances; her brothers Don (Margaret) and Frank; and her sister, Pauline (John).  She is survived by her husband, Jim Mangimeli; children:  Shari Conner (Mark), James Tews (Jennie), Joshua Tews, Chris Mangimeli (Rebecca), and Carin Call (Brian); grandchildren:  Amy and Joseph Conner, Lilli and Matthew Mangimeli, James Call, and Elyssa, Savhannah, Maura, Noelle, and Judah Tews; brother, Ronnie (Marilyn); sisters-in-law Carolyn Vencil and Marie Hagstrom; and brother-in-law, John Mangimeli.
