It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Carol Akers, age 68, of Omaha, NE. Carol passed away Sunday, February, 2nd, peacefully in her home with family and friends. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and teacher.
Carol was born April 29th, 1956 in McCook, Nebraska to parents Robert William Uerling and Claire E. (Anderjaska) Uerling. Growing up on the farm, Carol spent her time holding kittens, running free, and playing practical jokes on her siblings. She despised doing dishes. During high school at Republican Valley. She sang in the choir receiving honors at Districts. She excelled in 4-H earning purple ribbons at the Nebraska State Fair for her sewing and modeling. After high school, Carol attended University of Nebraska at Lincoln. There she became a member of the Tri Delta Sorority and was active in many community projects with her sorority sisters. Carol majored in Elementary education, graduating with her Teaching certificate. In 1978, she began her 28 year teaching career focusing on Kindergarten, music and robotics; spending most of her years teaching at Catholic schools. She retired from Skyline Elementary, leaving a lasting impression on more than 700+ students because of her encouraging spirit.
Carol met the love of her life, Mark Lon Akers on the ski slopes in Keystone, Colorado and they fell in love. She said, “he was confident, cheerful, fun, exciting and full of surprises”. He proposed on a return trip to Keystone at the Garden Room. They were married July 3rd 1982 at St. Patrick’s Church in McCook, NE and honeymooned in the mountains of Colorado by Upper Slate Lake. The couple made their home in Lincoln, NE where they were blessed with two children. and raised them in a home filled with warmth, love and joy. For 42 years Carol and Mark shared their lives together. They enjoyed hosting card parties and would go out ballroom dancing with a special group of friends. Carol and Mark enjoyed traveling; some of their favorite trips were to Hawaii and a trip exploring Europe with their son, D.J.
Carol was devoted to her children creating treasured memories and traditions. She paused her teaching career to ensure her children had a good start. She started the 4-H club Curious Kittens to share her knowledge of sewing, art and cooking with her daughter, Kara. She was a part of everything that her children were passionate about from piano lessons to sports. Because family meant everything to her, she worked hard to plan yearly trips to visit and spend time with family.
There was nothing that Carol couldn’t achieve. She began an in-home daycare called Little Miracles. The young children she cared for were like family members to her. She loved her church and was an active participant in the ground breaking and building of St. Peter’s Catholic Church of Lincoln, NE. After moving to Omaha; Carol earned her M.S. in Instructional Technology and began teaching again. She always kept a vegetable and flower garden. After retirement she became a member of the Dundee Garden Club making lasting memories with a wonderful group of friends.
Carol was a cherished mother who always knew how to make her children feel special. Her greatest joy was spending time with children especially her grandchildren, Kayley, Jolee and Barrett. They loved her dearly and brought out her most beautiful smile. Carol served the Lord well with her kindness, compassion and faith. Her endless love and guidance will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents; father-in-law Lon Akers, sister-in-law Suzanne Wallace, brother-in-law David Akers.
She is survived by her husband, Mark Akers of Omaha, NE; daughter, Kara (Brad) Hauber of Grant City, MO; and son, D.J. Akers of Omaha, NE; granddaughter, Kayley Hauber of Grant City, MO; granddaughter, Jolee Hauber of Grant City, MO; and grandson, Barrett Hauber of Grant City, MO; mother-in-law, Bobbie (Lon) Akers of Salina, KS; twin sisters, Rosann (Tom) Wattonville of Bakersfield, CA and Susanne (Mike) Osberg of Grand Island, NE; brother, Mark (Sherri) Uerling of McCook, NE; sister Nancy McGrath of Bennington, NE; brother James (Kathy) Uerling of Indianola, NE; and brother, Ray (Lee) Uerling of Flagstaff, AZ; sister-in-law Jay Johnson of Bluff City, KS; and sister-in-law Jamie Rains of Salina, KS; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held Monday, Feb. 10, 2025 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Gretna. A vigil with the Recitation of the Rosary will follow the visitation, beginning at 7:00 p.m., St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025, 10:00 a.m., at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Gretna with Father Hunke as Celebrant. Luncheon will follow at the church. Graveside burial will be 1:00 pm at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Gretna.
