Beverly Oberle

Beverly Jones Oberle, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend, passed away peacefully on August 27 at her home in Gretna, Nebraska. She was 84 years old. Bev was born on June 16, 1942, in Omaha, Nebraska, to William and Isabel (Berry) Jones. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rodney Oberle, and her parents. She is survived by her children, Michael Oberle and Lynn (Jeffrey) Roy, and her four grandchildren, Grace, Emerson, Braydon and Addison, who were a source of great joy and pride.

Bev was raised in Omaha, Nebraska, and graduated from Benson High School in 1960. She attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in education and met the love of her life, Rodney. They were joyfully married on August 6, 1966. In 1979, they moved from Omaha to a then rural acreage in Gretna, where they raised their two children and built a full and happy life together. For 40 years, they lovingly tended their acreage, growing and selling fruits and vegetables to the local community through their hobby farm, Oberle’s Garden. Bev will always be remembered for her remarkable work ethic and for the happiness she found outdoors, especially while caring for her roses and garden.

Bev began her career as an elementary school teacher in 1966 with the Omaha Public School District. She stepped away from the classroom to devote herself to raising Mike and Lynn. She returned to the work she loved in 1985 and dedicated the rest of her teaching career to children with disabilities at JP Lord in Omaha. Her commitment to her students also inspired her to continue her own education, and in 1992 she earned a master’s degree in special education from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

Bev was an active member of PEO Chapter E and found joy in reading, walking and, most of all, spending time with the family she loved so dearly.

Bev met every challenge in life with courage, determination and grace. She lost her hearing at the age of four, yet she attended public school, pursued her education and never allowed hearing loss to limit the life she wanted to live. Exceptionally intelligent with endless curiosity, she was inducted into Mensa in her twenties. Her children and grandchildren will remember her boundless energy, her fierce love for them and the care she poured into making every birthday and holiday special. Though Bev barely weighed 100 pounds, her remarkable strength was evident in everything she did—including pushing wheelbarrows filled with sweet corn up the hill from the garden to the house. Her strength, generosity and devotion to family will remain an enduring part of her legacy.

Bev’s family will receive friends during a visitation on Friday, September 4, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Roeder Mortuary in Gretna. A funeral service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, September 5, at 10:00 a.m. at Gretna United Methodist Church, followed by a luncheon at the church. Interment will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Eagle Cemetery in Eagle, Nebraska.
