Barbara E. Prottsman

Omaha - On August 24, 2026 in Omaha, NE, Barbara Elaine Prottsman, 85, was welcomed into the arms of her loving Lord and Savior.

Barbara Elaine Prottsman, formerly Barbara Elaine Fagerstone, was born March 2, 1941, in Culbertson, Nebraska, to Victor John and Silva Vida McMullen Fagerstone. The youngest of four children, Barbara grew up in Culbertson and graduated from Hayes Center in 1958.

Barbara began her working life in nursing, serving as a nurse’s aide at Saint Catherine’s Hospital in McCook from 1958 to 1959. She later attended Grace Bible School in Omaha for a year and worked as a nanny while in school. She returned home to help care for her mother, Silva, and later attended LPN school in Denver beginning in August 1962. After her mother’s death, Barbara returned to complete her LPN schooling.

Barbara married Gayle Prottsman on April 12, 1968. Together they lived in Denver for a time before making their home in Haxtun, Colorado. They raised two children, Sherrie Elaine and Nathan Wesley.

Barbara continued her career in health care for many years. Around 1982, she began working in surgical services at Holyoke Hospital. In 1991, she began working at Haxtun Hospital and later continued working in a nursing home until 2007.

Barbara and Gayle built a life together in northeastern Colorado, where they raised their family and became part of the community. Barbara enjoyed baking, being part of her church community, and hosting a quilting club.

She is survived by her children, Sherrie Derr and Nathan (Heidi) Prottsman; her grandchild, Brody Prottsman; and her sibling, Donald (Glen) Fagerstone. She was preceded in death by her parents, Victor (Silva) Fagerstone; her siblings, Geraldine Mintling and Dale Fagerstone; and her spouse, Gayle Prottsman.
