Albert J. Wheat

Albert Jonathan (Jack) Wheat was born November 17, 1932, in Lancaster, Kentucky, the second of 10 children. He spent his childhood in Perryville and in 1950 he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served honorably for eight years.

As a young airman stationed at Offutt Air Force Base, he met Myrlene Myers while roller-skating — a romance that would last more than 70 years. Albert and Myrlene were married March 25, 1955, at First Christian Church, Omaha, Nebraska. They made their home in St. John’s, Newfoundland, where he served as a Communications Center Supervisor and she worked as an advertising artist for the local newspaper. They enjoyed the friendly “Newfies” and the ever-present, wild Atlantic Ocean. Al was later assigned to Pope Air Force Base near Fayetteville, North Carolina, where their first son, Alan, was born at the Fort Bragg Army Hospital.

After he completed his military service in 1959, the family returned to Omaha, Nebraska, where their second son, Stuart, was born. Al went to work for World Insurance Company and later for Physicians’ Mutual Life Insurance Company.

Albert led the family on many adventures, camping at state and national parks across the United States. Some of these cross-country treks were to attend family reunions, large and small. Al and Myrlene’s interest in family genealogy also led them to visit county archives and cemeteries in small towns across several states. They continued roller-skating weekly for nearly 60 years, developing numerous lasting friendships.

Albert enjoyed walking, fishing and gardening among many other outdoor activities. His quiet affinity with animals and the natural world is a continuing source of inspiration. He is remembered as a quiet, gentle, and kind man with often humorous insights.

Albert passed away at home on February 10, 2025. He is survived by his wife: Myrlene; sons: Alan and Stuart; daughter-in-law: Courtnay; grandchildren: Zach and Alison; sister: Martha (Michael) Wilson; brothers: Bennie and Harry; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceded in death by his parents: Albert Lorain and Burnetta VanHook; sisters: Lorraine, Doris, Mae Etta, and Anna; brothers: William and Dale; and brother-in-law: Michael Wilson.
